Our class fable is Rhys & Meinir. Here is an outline of the story by year 5 pupils:
Once upon a time, two children named Rhys and Meinir lived in Nant Gwrtheyrn, North Wales.
Meinir’s father, Ifan secretly hoped the two would marry in the future.
One day, Rhys declared his love for Meinir by carving a love heart with their initials on the old oak tree.
On their wedding day, Meinir followed the custom at that time and hid from Rhys, in order for Rhys and his friends to find her. She hid in the old oak tree. Unfortunately, no one managed to find her.
Rhys was devastated, and spent the rest of his life living wandering the countryside searching for Meinir. On one stormy evening he sat by the old oak tree to shelter from the thunder and lightning.
Suddenly, a lightning bolt hit the old oak tree, and between its split trunk, Rhys saw Meinir’s remains in a wedding dress. As he raised his hand to touch the skeleton, another lightening bolt struck Rhys and killed him.
Rhys was found dead holding Meinir’s skeletal hand with a smile on his face and the two were buried together in the churchyard.
