Betty Campbell

Betty Campbell MBE (6 November 1934 – 13 October 2017) was a Welsh community activist, who was Wales’ first black head teacher. Born into a poor household in Butetown, she won a scholarship to the Lady Margaret High School for Girls in Cardiff. Campbell later trained as a teacher, eventually becoming head teacher of Mount Stuart Primary School in Butetown, Cardiff. She put into practice innovative ideas on the education of children and was actively involved in the community.

 

Class Poet (Welsh) – T. Llew Jones

Thomas Llewelyn Jones (11th October 1915 – 9th January 2009) was a Welsh poet, with over half a century of career in writing. He was one of the most popular and productive children’s poets in Welsh. He was known as T. Llew Jones. The life and work of T. Llew Jones is celebrated annually on the day of his birthday, 11 October

 

 

Class Poet (English) – Benjamin Zephanaiah

Dr Benjamin Zephaniah is a vegan, rastafarian children’s poet. His poem’s are influenced by his Jamaican heritage and racial equality. In 2015 he called for Welsh and Cornish to be taught in English schools, saying “Hindi, Chinese and French are taught in schools, so why not Welsh? And why not Cornish? They’re part of our culture.”

Class Legend 

The Four Branches of the Mabinogi are the oldest and most famous legends in Wales. First written down around eight hundred years ago, they were being told for many years before that. This is the legend of Branwen, the main character in the second branch of the Mabinogi, Branwen Ferch llyr.

 

 

 

 

 

Class Artist – Elfyn Lewis

Elfyn was born and grew up in Porthmadog. He now lives and works in Cardiff. Over the course of his 25 year career he has won numerous awards and prizes for his paintings including the Gold Medal for Fine Art in the National Eisteddfod in 2009, and the prestigious Welsh Artist of the Year award in 2010. He has also recently been elected to the Royal Cambrian Academy, Conwy.
